The occurrence happened about two or three miles South of the city, on the other tide of the river.John Hoy, tho victim of this affray, is not generally considered a saint by sny means. It is reported of hitn that he left bis wife sometime since, and In company with a young woman by the name of Lewia, wont from here to Missouri, but returned I st fall.It appears, aa near at we could learn, that thero had b-en some trouble between Huy aud a mao by the name of Peter Dietch, before.fu regard to ao indictment found against Huy on information furnished by Deitch; John, in the meantime, keeping out of tho way of Mr. Spilman until since tho commencement of the present term of court, when he was nabbed, taken before his honor, Judge Knapp, and fined $5 on two different indictments—one for telling whisky at a horse race last summer one year ago, and one for keeping a place to sell it from, and in default of the payment of the fino he was sent to jail and was only released a day or two ago.It appears Deitch and Hoy were both in the city together yesterday and rode a part of tho way home together, duriog which time they had some difficulty, and left the wagon near tho residence of Dr. Cowan, at tho brick School Uonse. After thoy left the wagon Hoy accused Deitch of causing all his difficulties, and getting him into jail etc; add said Deitch was a thief, and that he had stolen some ones coat and he conld prove it, whereupon we aro informed Deitch struck at him with an ax helve. Hoy thon took the ax handle away from Deitcb, and started on his way home, Deitch following demanding that the ax handle should be returned to him, and Hoy says be told him “he wonld not give it to him unless he wonld go away about his business. Deltch kept following him all the while, and finally slipped op behind him and struck him with a knife in the back, and also in the arm. It is a difficult matter to obtain anything more of the particulars in regard to the matter at present, as only a small boy saw the difficulty, and being unable to learn his name or where he lived, wo give the report as derived from different sources.This man Hoy, is a Hollander by birth, and is about 55 years of age, and as strange as it may seem, he walked all the way to the city after he was hurt, and was found last night by one of the Courixb carriers, almost in a fainting condition from the loss of blood, about 7 o’clock. He was taken to the office of Drs. Hinsey ft Lathrop where his wounds wero dressed by the latter named physician, and from thence he was taken to the European Hotel, where he now is, and the Dr. says, In a precarious condition,The woond in the back we are informed is about two lnchee deep, the tho stroke of tho knife completely severed tho fourth rib about two inches from the spine, and the other wound s in the arm about three inches below the shoulder severing the iru clo to tla bone for three and one-half inches.lie is receiving ail the care he can«■* »l*w uauiln vi uu uuita* «-...ilv, bis wife being with him this morning.Peter Dcitcli, the assailant is a Frenchman and also about fifty years of age.
