Coming to Lowell when young he engaged In the leather business, working for White Bros., when that firm was in its infancy.He was appointed as a supernumerary, on the police force. February 8. 1887. Six months later he became a regular patrolman and was assignedj to a Market street beat, nights under ' Chief Frank Wood. In 1S8S. during the i term of Major Noyes, he was trails- j ferred to Centralville and had all of the territory below Bridge street, on j the early night relief. Donaldson was the Instigator in getting ready the warrants for the arrest of Robert and Clan Vaughn. March 9. 1899. The warrants charged the brothers with breaking and entering and larceny. Together with In- . spectors Allen and La flam me. Lieut, j Mrosnan and officer Boyle, he went to i Farrell (’onatcm’s block. Dutton street, on the night in question and there routed out Robert Vaughn, in one of the most desperate of running fights ever known in local police annals. Lieut. Donaldson and Inspector Allen stood «*t Vaughn's doorway. Officer Boyle was in the rear of the house, and Lieut. Brosnan and Inspector Lafiamme were in ihe street. Vaughn had repeatedly threatened to shoot through the door, hut at the last minute changed his mind and jumped onto a rear roof, thence to the ground where the fierce pistolade began. Lieut. Brosnun had his clothing riddled in this fight. Vaughn had been out of the Western penitentiary. In Allegheny, Pa., hardly a month when this affair occurred. After the capture of Robert Vaughn, that same morning. Ohm was arrested in another part of the Farrell t'onaton block, while asleep.
