A BRISTOL MANUFACTURERCOMMITTED.At Birmingham Police-court yesterday, Edwin Gough, warehouseman, was charged with stealingcycle fittings and three gold-plated watches from hisemployer, Felix Chapman, cycle fittings manufacturer,Birmingham ; and William Chi vers, cycle manufacturer, Castl e-street, Bristol, was charged with receiving the goods with a guilty knowledge. Gough pleaded guilty, and stated that lie had been led to steal the articles by Olivers* Gough was sentenced to two mouths’ imprisonment, and then gave evidence against Olivers, stating that about four months ago Cbivers visited Mr. Chapman’s warehouse in Upper Priory, and pocketed a pair of hubs, or accessories, telling witness to keep his mouth shut, and giving him two or three shillings. A few weeks later, Chi vers again appeared, and told witness to get anything he could, and he would see him right. When hewent away, witness purloined a number of cycle chains, and handed them to the prisoner in a parcelat the station, receiving 5s. recompense. On one occasion witness received 4d. for stealing a parcel containing about £4 worth of goods. On January 28th prisoner asked witness to get as much stuff as he could, to pay him for his journey from Bristol, and dictated a list of articles he wished him to procure. Witness, however, was- arrested before he couldexecute his commission. The detectives exhibited in court chains, brackets, c., winch were found on prisoner’s premises at Bristol, and were identified as being similar to those stolen from the prosecutor* For the defence, a brother of prisoner was called, and swore that the 14 brackets had been in stock for seven months, and were exhibited at a show in August. Prisoner was committed to the sessions, bail being allowed, himself in £40 and two sureties in £20 each.
