But once in a while something comes along to change the pace,Glen Henson, an inmate at McAlester State Prison in Oklahoma, recently spent a few days in the Hutchinson jail awaiting trial on charges of escaping from the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory. Before he was returned to the Oklahoma prison, he left a poem with Reno County Sheriff Jim Fountain.“Reno County Jail”“Strangers who come to Hutch should knowLewis’s Jail is fine and dandy. They do what they can to make you glow as long as you stay right and handy.“The meals ail come from a gourmet cook Who treats you right all of the time. The Jail is run very close to the Book No matter what you done as a crime.“For every thing they do for youThey don’t expect a thing in return. They’re not hired hereto make you blue And they try real hard to help you learn.“I was there so I should know That what I’ve said is fine and true. They’ve helped me make a life to show And now I’m not the least bit blue.”Good inmateFountain said Henson “is just a model prisoner. He’s got a lot of time to do and he wants to do it easy.”Henson also proved to be something of a problem solver during his short stay in Hutchinson. When other prisoners tried to give officials a hard time, Fountain said Henson asked that the trouble-maker be put in his cell.“We never had any trouble from them after that,” Fountain said. “You just don’t expect that sort of thing from his kind of prisoner (one with a long term).”“Lewis’ jail” refers to Lewis Jayne, the jailer.
