Torture and killing nothing new in CanadaCont. from page 7where a white man is accused of killing at least forty nine women, the majority of which arc indigenous women. While most people are appalled by the sheer brutality of the torture and killings, this is really nothing new in Canada. There is a list of at least five hundred murdered and missing indigenous women in Canada. Pickton was able to continue his killings for years because the value of the women's lives was never high priority for police or government. Reality is that 50% of the people killed at the hands of police each year in Canada are indigenous people. There won’t be $10 million settlement for any of the indigenous womenkilled. It was the negligence of the police and the government that allowed Pickton to continue his mass murders. Again this type of attitude in Canada is nothing new!Unlike the Arar case, the Conservative government of Canada is now halting the settlement of the residential school survivors and forcing another lengthy delay. The decision to appeal a court ordered settlement is nothing more than cheap party politics. The Conservatives balk at the court ordered payment of as much as $40 million to the lawyer who represented many of the 80.000 residential school survivors. TonyMerchant is of course an old friend of formerPrime Minister Jean Chretien. Once again, those that are held hostage arc our people, as native elders die awaiting compensation. The crimes committed against our people decades ago are never dealt with in the same degree of compassion that has been shown to Arar. Arar will be compensated financially as an individual at a rate 1000s of times more than individual First Nation survivors. As stated, there is nothing wrong with the Arar settlement but when will the white immigrant governments in Canada ever treat our people with the same respect.Chief Terrence NelsonRoscsu RiverAnishinabe First Nation Government
