f By RICK NIELSENTwo women soon will be on patrol duty for the first time in the Ventura County Sheriffs department, Sheriff A1 Jalaty said todav.The pair, deputies Catherine “Kitty” Holberg and Mary Grizzard. are elatedJalaty said the reassignment of the two female deputies into patrol is an integral part of the department's expanded patrol program that goes into effect in 11 days.Operating from the department's headquarters in Ventura and the East Valley Station. Thousand Oaks, the two women “will determine the feasibility of expanding the female role in the patrol force, Jalaty said.He said both Mrs. Holberg. a o'2-year veteran of the department, and Mrs. Grizzard. a 42-year member, will be given an extensive in-service refresher course in such areas as patrol procedures, weaponless defense, report writing and firearms.Following the course, the two will be placed as second officers . in two-person patrol cars where they will receive further on-the-job training, according to the sheriff.“After several months of additional seasoning, it is expected the two female deputies will take their place alongside their male counterparts in the operation of one-person county patrol cars, said Jalaty.Reassignment of the two women into patrol is a breakthrough for the 25 women deputies whose functions include working at desks or in corrections, the sheriff noted.
