The ' coroner's inquest, however, showed that. Delaney was shot twice in the ■ back by Charles Lamar, who is in the Bakersfield jail, charged with the mnr-der. The motive for the shooting is unknown, but it is believed to be a private grudge, as Delaney was tin- j armed and Lamar lay in wait for sov- : eral hours and shot him from behind. To protect him from lynching Umar was removed to the Bakersfield jail, as a vigilance committee was looking for him.Delaney was well and favorably known in San Francisco, where he was formerly a frc ight clerk for the Southern Pacific. Since then he had been manager at Mojave for the Transcontinental Freight Association. His former employers in this city speak in the highest terms of his character and ability. Members of his family deny the statement that Delaney was killed in a duel.
