Shipley, of tl New Holland, was arrested tor the revolting G and heinous crime of incest—criminal inti- ^mcy with bis daughter, Mary M. Shipley, j 81\aged sixteen years. The complaint upon ; 1 which the warrant was issued, wa9 sworn j li to by the daughter, who states that the un- j natural intimacy has existed for some | o months, commencing shortly atter the death j d of her mother iu the summer of 1883, that t her father compelled her to submit to his c lust, and by threats and intimidatioa fre quently repeated the crime. Ou Mondaylast, she refused to yield to his demands, andileft home, goiug to the house of a neighbor, j ( to whom she detailed the treatment of her j father to her, which led to his arrest.Bbipley was taken bofore W A. Welch, Mayor of New Holland, waived an examination, and failing to furnish bail in the sum of $1,000, was brought to this city, Monday j night, by Marshal Dundon, and placed in the county jail.New Holland was greatly excited over the revolting affair, and threats of lynching Shipley were made.The girl is proposessing in appearance, intelligent, and has been well respected in j the village.
