John Ebaugh, longtime resident of this section and whose demise occurred Oct 4, 1940, said he knew the Curry hors well, and that with the exception of Kid, they were fun loving, kind-hearted boys and that Loney Curry, Hank Curry and Johnnv Curry wen well liked and nobody could ask for better neighbors. That, not inlike the , James boys, they were persecuted, hunted and looked upon ar bad men. Ebaugh was running a saoon and store in Malta at the time (f the train robbery near Wagner. When Curry and Thornhill entered the door and walked up to the bar, a silence fell on the crowd. The Kid walked to where Pike was leaning on the bar and struck him a terrific blow that floored him and then beat him unmercifully. Pike is supposed to have reached into his pocket for his handkerchief to wipe the blood from his face, but Curry interpreted the gesture differently, for he drew his gun and shot Landusky through the heart, causing his death. Jim Thornhill and Loney Curry had stood guard during the affray. It was then Kid Curry decided he had better feo elsewhere and accordingly thereafter, needing money with which to travel, he and his followers held up the Great Northern train. On the morning of July 4, 1901, Winters had as guests some young men„from the east and he arose early to prepare breakfast. He stepped outside the house to the washstand, when a shot from someone secreted behind his pigpen killed him. His guests, hearing the report of the gun, ran out quickly but could find no one. Winters* brother in Florida wrote to a Fort Benton attorney to recover Jim’s ranch. He was told the proceedings would not be difficult, but that he must come to the Little Rockies to prove his case. He replied that he would not come to that Godforsaken hole if the whole state ofMontana were oriven to him
