Grand Jury Continues ProbeAttack on VenturaThe 1971) Ventura CountyGrand .lury is continuing the investigation into an armed attack on attorney Don Holt Jr. and has heard from a key wit-•rness in the case. The Press-Courier learned today.Garment manufacturer Merrill Shapiro was indicted by the 1909 grand jury last Dec. 12 for al legedly hiring gunman Fred Knowles Holzer Jr. to terrorize the Ventura attorney last June 14.Gerald Ira “Jerry Katz theman who allegedly put Shapiro into contact with ex-convict Holzer, appeared in a secret session before the 1970 jury Friday,the newspaper learned. He at first refused to testify underFifth Amendment privileges, but was granted immunity from prosecution.Katz had been mentioned in last year's jury proceedings as tin man who allegedly put Shapiro in touch with Holzer when Shapiro went shopping for anunderworld figure to interveneafter claiming his wife was •taking him to the cleaners” in a divorce.“ ... It started out with Shapiro getting in touch with a man by the name of Jerry Katz,” another witness — William Edward Skipper, Hoizer's alleged accomplice — had told the grand jury.
