MorningGuts Houst; Mystery Girl Huntn* ntartsEarly Monday morning, while on routine patrol, Sgt. Tony Aguilar and Patrolman Louis Frausto noticed smoke drifting across town. In attempting to trace down the source of the smoke, other patrolmen were summoned to the area. At 3:42 a.m. a flre was discovered In a home at 1600 San Andres in the Dale Bellamah Addition of Hobbs.City Patrolman Gene Gunderson and Johnny Clark broke in the front door of the blazing home in an attempt to enter the house to see if anyone was hom3 but the intense heat and flamss drove them back. They woke up the people in the houses on either side of the blazing inferno as there seemed to be a possibility for awhile that perhaps one of the neighboring houses would catch fire.As soon as fireman hadthe flames down enough to enter the house they started dragging the remains of bedding outside as they had been informed there should be two teenage girls in the house. Thorough sifting of the ashes and debris remaining produced no body.A telephone conversation with Chet Lasley, 701 Sanger, revealed that the Jack Hales, who lived in the house had gone to Texas over the weekend and that he (Lasley) was tending to the Hale business, Jack’s Burgers, on South Jefferson, while they were away from home. He further told officers that although the Hales had taken their two younger children with them to Texas, two teenage girls had remained at home.After several attempts by city police officers to contact an aunt of the girls, and stopped momentarily by no more address than “The Carlsbad Highway andtele-phone lines that were apparently crossed, Mrs. Jewell Smith was contacted and informed of the fire. She advised officers that the girls had not spent the night with her.Officers continued through early morning hours attempting to locate the two apparently missing. Shortly after 8 a.m. the girls were located.
