IllinoisClassified.......Comics..........Commentary..EntertainmentLifestyles.......Records.........Sports...........TEMPERATURESHigh Wednesday was 58; low Was 49.By LEE SMITH _Managing Editor_This was a year we almost made it without sending our troops off to fight.One year ago mother and fathers, husbands and wives were faced with sending their loved ones off to fight in what would be described as one, the “Mother of All Wars,” the Persian Gulf War.Saline County had its own battle this year — a battle that tore the town apart. The Harrisburg teacher’s strike lasted from Aug. 19, the day school was scheduled to begin.The strike drove a wedge into the residents of Harrisburg with some siding with the teachers and some with the Unit 3 Board of Education. The strike was fi-nally settled with the controversial help of U.S. Rep. Glenn Poshard. With an agreement reluctantly signed by the school board, students went to class for the firsttime on Sept. 27.Christmas 1992 was celebrated early for some of our troops as they prepared to leave on a humanitarian mission to help the starving people of Somalia and spend Christmas Day helping to secure villages so starving people could receive food.A NEW PRESIDENT was elected this year and with it, for many, the hope of change and prosperity.The hope for peace in 1992 was shattered when the body of Teresa Catalano was discovered early in on the morning of Jan. 6. Catalano had been missing since New Year’s Eve. As the year draws to a close the cause of her death is still undetermined.January also saw Shelia Beasley sentenced to eight years for the second degree murder of her husband Luther Glen Beasley.On a sports note Denver Broncos Coach Dan Reeves was named Coach of the Year for the National Football League team. Reeves was fired from the Broncos on Dec. 29.As January drew to a close, the price of gas in the Harrisburg area was 99 cents a gallon and Rep. DavidPhelps filed for his fifth term as state representative.A legislative redistricting battle later in the yearwould split the district formerly held by Phelps and some Saline County residents would get a new representative, Larry Woolard.A fiery crash at 9:53 a.m. on the morning of Feb. 6 shocked the area and changed the lives of some3 AP\s Top 10 stories of 1992.—Page 16□ A hard year for corporations.—Business, Page 5Evansville residents forever.A Kentucky National Guard C-130 on training maneuvers crashed into Jo Jo’s Restaurant and the Drury Inn in Evansville killing 16. In Harrisburg, the third strike in five years by Unit 3 teachers was the worst yet. Wounds inflicted during the 27-day strike are still in the process of healing, as the school district continues to struggle financially. William Joe Jordan was brought back to Saline County after a nine-day manhunt. He pled guilty to murdering Ralph Thompson of Carrier Mills with an agreement that the state would not seek the death penalty. Logging on the Shawnee National Forest continued to ba debated during the year. A fiery plane crash in Evansville was a grim reminder of another mishap 15 years ago that claimed the lives of Eldorado cage stars Mike Duff and Kevin Kingston.
