WILLIAM BALTIKAUSK1 of Spring Valley claims the brand of whiskeythat he manufactures has been questioned and that sinister characters I have been insinuating that he uses lye and potato peelings and other adulter-| ants in its manufacture. He even protests to the press about it and vehe-i mcntly denies that he uses anything other than the very purest of material. And, paradoxically as it may seem, the papers are giving him front page and top box free advertising where others having legal products for sale are charged plentifully for space, and under no circumstances given front page position. It is only natural that Mr. Baltikauski should defend the quality of liis product when assailed. He is a component of what is now considered the fourth largest industry- in this Elysian country, thoroughly organized with its great captains of industry and lesser lights, spawned and fostered by the ' noble experiment”; but why that product should be gratuitously advertised is one of the many unexplainable enigmas born of the era of prohibition. One paper suggests that the mash be tried out on the family cow and if the animal lives, the stuff is safe to drink. If our memory serves us correct that experiment was made not long ago and resulted in the loss of a cow, and it is presumed that such costly experiments are now abandoned. From a standpoint of economics, it is more advantageous to try it out on human beings with its lesser financial loss.
