V4the side of a pickup truck andllT1-a* jamRes'dentsOf Death Rowid'4r■/ave Stays' AUSTIN ( A P) - Twenty-two'* men on death row at Texas’ h Huntsville State Prison are under indefinite stays of exe-cution granted by federalcourts.reThe stays were granted toprovide time to perfect federal court appeals of their convic-1 tions, the Board of Pardons and ^ Paroles said.* All of the death sentenceshave been upheld by the state Court of Criminal Appeals, Texas’ court of last resort forcriminal cases.Huntsville’s electric chairhas not been used since Joseph Johnson Jr., a Houston Negro, was electrocuted July 30, 1984 Probably the longest residentof death row now is Joe Edward Smith, convicted of the 1959 slaying of a 12-year-old Houston boy. His conviction was•raffirmed by the Court of Criminal Appeals in 1962.Others who have received indefinite stays, according to board records, are James LeeMarion, Calvin Sellars, John Oscar Young, Robert Eddie Louis Jackson.
