22 Men On Death0Row Under Stays Of Execution\AUSTIN (AP) — TwentjMwo men on death row at Texas* Huntsville State Prison are under indefinite stays of execution granted by federal courts.The stays were granted to provide time to perfect federal court appeals of their convictions, the Boarl of Pardons and Paroles said.All of the death sentences have been upheld by the state Court of Criminal Appeals. Texas' court of last resort for•icriminal cases.Huntsville’s electric chair has not been! used since Joseph .Johnson Jr.. a Houston Negro, was electrocuted July 30, 1964.Probably the longest resident of death row now is Joe Edward Smith, convicted of the 1959 slaying of a 12-year-old Houston boy. His conviction was affirmed by the Court of Criminal Appeals in 1962.Others who have received indefinite stays, according to board records, are James Lee Marion, Calvin Sellars, John Oscar Young, Robert Eddie Louis Jackson, Edwin M. Bert-sch, Bennie Longoria, Walter Lee Sir os, Melvin Lee Dixon, Harold C. Hints, John Franklin Burns, Melvin Alexander Payton, Leon Spencer, Kenneth Bruce Martin, Ralph Carl Powers, Eugene Welch, Clifford D. Carroll, Leon Johnson, Johnny L. Clemons, Jimmie R. Gillory, Nelson Chevallier and William C. Bryan.
