HE AND BROTHER HAD JUST FINISHEDPUSHING CARAn Intensive hunt for a htl-and-run driver was underway last night in this section while funeral arrangements were being made for his victim* Wilford P- (Wimpy) Hays, 23, Skeliy employe and popular softball pitcher, fatally Injured at 2:30 a. m. Christmas morning,“Wimpy as he preferred to be \7lJfid, died yesterday afternoon in i local hospital of a crushed skull. \n operation failed to save his life, He and Miss DeAun Heiskell, Miss Pampa of 1935 and 1936, were to iave been married during the week tallowing New Year's,According to friends who were vith him at the time, Hays was struck on the legs as he started to *el into the car lie and his brother rad Hays had pushed to get started icar Six Owens eating place on South Cuyler. As the car struck him, 'Wimpy” was hurled to the pave-nent, his head hitting the hard concrete.In the car were Miss Hesikell, his fiancee, and Miss Helen Murphy. Miss Heiskell said she saw the car coming at considerable speed and sounded .the horn. She , said the ights were on. The Hays car wab leaded north, the three witnesses aid, and the other car attempted to £0 between Wimpy’s’' car and the •urb. The Hays machine was on the vest side of the street, it was reported,•‘Wimpy had just started to getnto his own car when he was hit.rhe four young people had just eft the cafe. They had come there ‘rnm the house of a friend where :hey had enjoyed piano music, it vas said.Local police worked steadily on :he case Friday and yesterday. Few dues were available.Hays was the star pitcher on the ESkclly-Schafer softball team, Pan-landle champions in 1935, and one the lending teams last season. He vas one of the pitchers for Voss meaners at the state tournament at Fort Worth. He had worked for Skeliy for three years, coming here rom Burkbumett.Hays is survived by five brothers, 2d of Skellytown, H. R, of Burbank, Delbert of Chicago, and Law-ence and Raymond of Austin, Minn., tnd a sister, Miss Grace M. Hays of Hannon Falls, Minn.The body will lie at rest at the C. Malone Funeral Home between -2 noon and 3 o’clock, this afternoon when It will be taken overland o Burkbumett for burial, probably Monday afternoon,A Pampn man was being questioned at the city police station last light in connection with the acci-lent.
