Joseph Carey Beaten and Robbed.City Marshal Pearman and Sheriff Bridges yesterday afternoon arrested two men who assaulted and robbed Joseph Carey, a civil war veteran of this city, just before noon yesterday. The men are strangers here and give their names as Chas. Baker and C. M. Cover. They met Carey in Newtown and after finding out that he was going across Shoal creek to visit a friend told him they would walk with him, saying they were going to the edge of town to catch a freight to Joplin.Carey said he went with them and they walked along the Kansas City Southern tracks to the bridge over Shoal creek. It was there, he declared, that the pair commanded him to go under the bridge with them. When he refused, they began to beat him about the head and face. Then they dragged him to a point about 200 yards down the creek and relieved him of a gold watch, a silver watch and $20 that he had in one of his pockets. They threatened the man alleged, to tie him and throw him into the stream. It was at this juncture that a youth named Brittenham, who lives in the vicinity, appeared on the scene. He had started to walk to town. Brittenham told the men they had “better leave the old man alone, because the police would catch them.”The boy ran to a near-by telephone and at 11:45 o’clock was connected with the city marshal, who, with Sheriff Bridges, rushed to the scene in a motor car. When the officers reached the bridge the boy was there. Carey had been removed to a residence for medical attention. Later he was brought to Neosho.Brittenham went with the officers and after a short quest they located the two men. Both ran and attempted to hide along the banks of the creek. They were unsuccessful, however and offered no resistance when the officers swooped down on them.Marshal Pearman instituted a search on the creek bank near where the men had hidden, and discovered the watches owned by Carey. One v^as stuck in ice on the creek and the other was buried in a mud bank. No money or other articles was found. The men were brought to Neosho and placed in the city jail. Carey later identified them as the ones who beat and robbed him. The Brittenham youth also identified them.Cover is about 28 years old and Baker is about 33. Both men are dark and wore comparatively new blue serge suits. It is thought that these men might be the parties who shot and killed Marshall Oren in Joplin Monday night, and we understand been the m Car bruisi coverSee last iAclSymp*4-5.An I can want low a cataliMrrecei’ her « Clara Cass\T1ords tomlt; in aiWiEngli 1774. size i; half c the h the T coppeThlt; tion c Lodg and 1 E.
