Congressman Arthur Mitchell inserted this speech in the Congressional Record, possibly his last official act in congress as a member of that body from the first district of Illinois“These same men are loud and long In their acdaim for democratic rights of American citizens, but they lynch Negroes when it comes to the consideration of their citizenship rights in this country,” Mr. Mitchell declared.“It is my opinion that our own country must set its house hi order, however, painful this might be. and practice democracy as well as preach it, The recent lynching; ofI two Negro boys, 14 years of age. at Shubuta, Mississippi was just as responsible as any crime which ha? been committed by Nazis or | the Japanese against our fighting soldiers.“There has been no punishment meted out to these mddnight murders and wicked assassians. and there will probably be none.
