XJVOLUME 41. NUMBER 22.HOOLE’S SLAYERSSTILL AT LARGETHEY SUGGED IN KEEPING HID.Marshal James H. Willis ReturnsFrom an Unsuccessful SearchFor Jake flays, Will Collinsand James Vaughn.Marshal James H. Willis has returned from atrip to Kentucky, Tenfessee and Virginia, where he searched for Jake Hays, Will Collins and James Vaughn, who killed “Jimmy” Hoole at Jackson Hill during the latter part of November. Willis washot on the trail, but was not given the right kind of assistance by the authorities in the places where he hunted for themen. After the killing,, the men were reported as having gone to Straight Creek, Kentucky, to work in the mines. Willis went to Straight Creek, where he discovered that the men hs d been working, but had gone to Lee county, Virginia, so he was informed. Willis went to Lee county, but could discover no trace of the men. Acting onanother clue, he then went to Claiborne county Tennessee, and succeeded in getting on the trackof the three men.Relatives of two of the menresided at a town in Claiborne county and relatives of the h *dman seven miles away. Wi ispressed into service two eputy sheriffs and another man whoknew Hoole's slayers. The plan was to find out when the men were at home, surround the house and capture them. 1 nally, one evening, one of ihe deputies informed Willis that the two men were at home. So he and Willis went to the house and searched it but the criminals were notthere. They had probably received warning of the arrival of the Sullivan marshal and had fled to the mountains. Willis believes that he will yet be able to land them, but in view of the fact that the men knew he was after them, and there being innumerable hiding places in the mountains, it was folly to prosecute the search further at this time.Marshal Willis say* the country in the section where he searched for the men was nothing but mountains. There are many coal mines, and railroads are run up narrow gulches to reach them nes. The coal is m ined by shafts driven horizontally in the face of the mountains. Some of these are hundreds of feet above the railroads, and each mine has an incline railroad, consisting of two tracks, a loaded car deeend-ing while an empty car ascends.SULLIVAN MAN OF 1NEVIHenry Rai of the three rans of the this county, eran of the 1never asked for a pensioi kind.
