McCARTYOne year ago yesterday the bodies of a mother and eight of her children were found in a caved-in cellar near Farwell, Texas.Today George Jefferson Hassell, 39 years old, confessed murderer of his wife, eight step-children, in Farwell, and another woman and three babies, in California, awaits a sentence of death in the electric chair. Following an appeal he will be re-sentenced in Farwell county district court on January 9. He is allowed thirty days of grace and will I probably go to the chair early in February.Hassell awaits his fate calmly; laughing, talking, joking with fellow prisoners, making friends with officers and in general presenting the appearance of a well fed, prosperous care-free farmer.The other day the writer was with him for a day in the Plainview jail.
