Burnett trial costs $47,155.62BEAUMONT — Criminal District Judge Larry Gist submitted a bill of $47,155.62 to the Jefferson County Auditor Tuesday for expenses in the capital murder trial of Linda May Burnett.The fees are to be paid to Burnett’s court-appointed defense attorney Charles Carver, whose original expense claims totalled $117,524.29.“In making the award,” Gist wrote in a letter to County Auditor Jerry Ware explaining how the figures were determined, “every category was closely examined and evaluated and every effort was made to make the award fair both to Mr. Carver and to the people of Jefferson County.”Gist' approved a sum of $18,700 toCarver for pre-trial fees and $16,250 for trial fees. He requested the county pay San Antonio Lawyer Mark Stevens $5,416.10.The bill calls for a total of $3,713.23 to be paid to investigators Mike Adams and Brad Bacom and $234.56 to expert witnesses Dr. Richard Coons and Dr. Wendell Dickerson.A total of $706.87 for a trip Stevens made to San Antonio, photo copies and long-distace calls were disallowed because supporting documentation was not provided, Gist said in the letter.Fortunately,” the letter reads, “because of fines and fees assessed in other criminal cases, the payment of this award will not involve disbursing taxpayers funds.”
