MANUEL GOMEZ 'lt;BOUND OVER.Charged with Murder of RafaelCastanaido.The Preliminary Examination BeforeIJudge Lander Held at 1Oxnard.The preliminary examination ofManuel Gomez, charged with the mtirder of Kafael Castanaido, was held before Judge Lander in Oxnard onWednesday.It will be remembered that Castatiaido was found by Major Carr on thenight of the 17th of this month, In hisyard, dead, covered with blood andwith several knife wounds on his per-1 Ison.Oornez was arrested in Los Angeles jand brought back to Ventura by SheriffCharlebois.Attorney F. W. Ewing of Venturarepresented the county and conductedthe examination. The prisoner had nocounsel.T. M. Hill aided a9 Court interpreter.A. Pratt of Ventura acted as Courtreporter.The first witness was a Spaniardnamed Morales, who testified that deceased and defendant were at his tentin Oxnard on the evening of the 17tb,singing, playing the guitar and drinking port wtne. He left the tent foisome purpose for a short time, andwhen he returned they were both goneand he never saw them again. Therewas no quarreling at his place, buti they were both under the influence ofliquor. He asked them not to sing soloud, as tlu'y would disturb the neigh-I borhood. The defendant lmd a largedagger on his person, about a foot long.i He took it out to get the cork out of thebottle of wine. Saw the deceased nextand identified him when he was deadi at Major Carr’s place.iDr. G. A. Broughton testified tomaking an examination of the deceased. He found four wounds, evidently indicted by a sharp instrument.One was on the right side of the neck,1 ! about three inches long, partly seveiiefing the jugular vein, and was sulheieutto cause death. The lower lobe of theleft ear was cut oil*. The third woundwas on the left side of the neck, andthere was a wound iu the left shoulder.IpDeceased appeared to have been deadbetween six and twelve hours.*iHenry Arellanes, deputy sheriff andconstable, of Ventura, testified that helmd had seveial con vernations with therdn0prisoner since his incarceration in thecounty jail. The deviated was a badman, aud lie was afraid of him.
