Louis B. ‘Ike’ AdamsBESSEMER — Louis B. “Ike” Adams, 77, a lifelong residentof Bessemer, died peacefully Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, 2001, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield.He was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Bessemer, son of the late Daniel and Catherine (Sprada) Adams. He attended St. Sebastian Catholic School and A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer.Following his junior year, Ike joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He received an honorary diploma from A.D. Johnston HighSchool in 1943. Ike was in the Coast Guard from Oct. 10,1942, to Oct. 12, 1945, and received an honorable discharge.On March 3, 1951, he was united in marriage with the former Beverly Mae Ross, in Bessemer. She preceded him indeath on Jan. 31,1995.Ike was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 66, St. Sebastian Catholic Church of Bessemer, the Holy Name Society, and for many years worked “bingo” at the church. He was an avid bowler, gardener and hunter.Ike was employed as a mail carrier and a clerk at the Bessemer Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 1980.Survivors include four sons, Tom, Wakefield, Greg (Barb), Bessemer, Bob (Debbie), Wakefield, and Rick, Kingsley, Mich.; a daughter, Kathy (Dave) Paynter, Bessemer; 11 grandchildren, Kristy (Paul) Recla, Craig and Kari Paynter, Nikki Londo, Jessie Oberst, Eric, Kady, Jenny, Erin and Chandler Adams, and Bobby Brentar Jr.; and a great-grandson, Mason Louis Recla.Also surviving are a brother, Eugene (Nancy) Adams, Milwaukee; a sister, Catherine Adams, Sun City West, Ariz.; three brothers-in-law, John Ross, East Lansing, Harvey Ross, Davison, Mich., and George (Scottie) Williams, Saginaw; special church friends, the Jackson kids, Thomas and Claire; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides his parents and wife, Ike was preceded in death by three brothers, Fabian, Carl and Jerome Adams; three sisters, Florence Adams, Josephine Miller and Rita Brown; and a grandson, Lee Paynter.A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m., at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 212 E. Iron St., Bessemer, with the Revs. Joseph Carne and Louis Bracket, concelebrants.The family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Dec. 29 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons Craig Paynter and Eric Adams, and nephews Dan Adams, Scott Williams, Todd Ross, Brett Ross and Eric Ross.Immediately following the Mass, a luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall.In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Sebastian Catholic Church Building Fund or the Bessemer Public Library.Spring burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.Chappell-Frick-Zielinski Funeral Service Inc. of Bessemer, is in charge of the arrangements.
