On the thirty-third day be declared his willingness ^ to do anything demanded of him, a* he could , stand It no longer. When let out Into the , general prison Chase weighed thirty-two ^ pounds less than when he was committed to the dark cell; he had lost In weight at the I rate of exactly a pound a day. From that j day to this, there has been no more exemplary prisoner. .This man Chase has an Interesting criminalhistory. He Is a giant In stature, aud he balls from Chippewa. When ;he was com-I raltted for the rest of bis life, nearly ten years ago. Chase was but 21 years of age. He was a hard customer from boyhood. One night a relative, a mere boy, stopped at his mother’s house and Chase learned that he had $100, which he had collected on some land which the boy’s mother had sold He followed him down the road a short distance the next I morning and killed him with a ellng-shot, I covering the body with some brash, where It I was soon afterwards found. lt;I
