S. Commissioner on a charge of taking a stolen car over the state line, authorities announced .United States Department of Justice inspectors are investigating the case because the men, who it is claimedhave both served time in prisons, arecharged with violating the FederalDyer Act when the car was driven from Massachusetts into New Hampshire, City Marshal Leonard M. Hewitt revealed to the Herald.The two men, Anthony Rosa. 24, of Hancock street, Boston, and Charles Engel. 25, of 81 Broadway, Bostou, admitted according to state police, taking the car from a Stuart street parking lot in Boston.Their hectic adventures from Boston to Portsmouth ended when Patrolman Edward Scarponi captured them at gun-point in the rear of the Whippleschool.A 90-mile-an-hour pursuit of themen started on the Lafayette highwayin Hampton when State Troopers Herbert Oray of Portsmouth and DelwynaeaaadPhilbrick of Rye followed the speeders after they had gone at a 50-mile speed through the congested section there. During the wild chase that followed, a fusillade of shots from state troopers’ automatics failed to halt thespeeding machine. Bullets struck the car but ricocheted without tearing open the gas tank.The bandits, captured at gunpoint, were taken to Portsmouth police station for questioning, fingerprihting and photographing. The story Rosa told state polce was that they stole the car from a Stuart street parking lot in Boston and headed for Kittery, Me., where Rosa said he planned to meet a Marine that they knew and then take the car back to Boston.He said that at Newburyport he noticed that they were getting lew on gas so he pulled up to a filling station near the state line and told the attendantto fill up the tank. He said he asked theattendant to clean off the windshield and when he went Into the building after a cloth and cleaning spray, hedrove off.“When followed after going through Hampton Center, I told Engel that we could get away from them easy. I thought probably the cops would get tired of chasing us,” Rosa concluded after telling about his wild run from Hampton to Portsmouth.Patrolman Neil Bierce fingerprintedthe men at headquarters. Rosa told police that he had a record with the Boston police department and that he had served time in Indiana.State troopers told The Herald todaythat their 10-mile chase from Hampton Center was at a 90-mile-an-hour speed all the way and that several times thebandit car missed hitting trucks and other machines only by inches as they passed on curves and hills.
