She continued:“We heard them leave and we waited for a few minutes, then one of the trusties pushed the door open with his foot and I ran to the elevator and started down to the sheriff’s office to tell them about it. When I got to the ground floor I found Joe (Joe Aolvarez, the jailer) on his way up to the jail.“I told him what had happened and he ran into the elevator and went up there as fast as he could.”Jailer Olivarez said that he found the cell locking apparatus jammed and the key stuck in the cover to the box. “I couldn’t open it, so I ran around to the outside of the bull pen where I could look in and see Mr. Lambright. I asked him if he was hurt, and he told me, ‘No’.’’Lambright remained in the cellfor an hour and 45 minutes beforethe lock could be repaired and the door opened to free him.“There wasn’t anything to it,’’ he remarked later, “because when they swarmed out on me and toldme what they did, I saw I had to go to jail—so I did it!’’The prisoners left the building through the new addition now under construction on the courthouse.
