This bent the key to prevent it from working properly. The cover could not be reopened and the locking mechanism to the cell door could not be reached.One of the prisoners ran out of the bull pen. across a hall and entered the jail kitchen.He found Mrs. Precious Foley, a 48-year-old Negro cook, making bread.“He came up and grabbed me,” Mrs. Foley said, and forced me to go with him into the bull pen. The other three were there. They tried to open the cover to the cell door locks but the key wouldn't work. They tried several times and when they couldn’t do it, they took me over to another cell where the door was unlocked. They shoved me in there with several other trusties and pushed a table against the door to keep it closed.”The prisoners also herded a trusty from the kitchen, E. M. Pope, into the cell with Mrs. Foley.She continued:
