IsEF15GPH1byno-K.Jo*89,sellThere lias been a long struggle among the numerous candidates for this position in this vicinity. One year ago last November, immediately after the presidential election, there were almost as many candidates for he postmastership of Chillicothe as there were Republicans in town. At first the fight put on an ugly appearance, with no indications of bloodshed. Petitions were being circu latcd and fired into the newly elected presidcut in doses varying in size from a wheelbarrow load to a dray load, each candidate expecting to receive his commission by return mail, empowering him to take charge of the postoffice and commence draw ing his salary. But alas, no commission came. A close observer would easily discern the candidates by the regularity with which the** wjnt for their mail. Later in the fight the candidates began to lose hope, and one by one they commenced falling out of the rank until only three remained—Toppass, Smiley and Wanamaker. About two weeks ago the Constitution published an expression from the postmaster-general that knocked Cousin Willie off the track, leaving only two for the president to select from.THE APPOINTMENT A GOOD ONE.The appointment is one that will be heartily endorsed by the patrons of the Chillicothe postoffice. Mr. Toppass is a consistent Republican, a sterling lt;itizen, with a business ea*-paeity that is well known, and besides he is a gentleman whose ener gies and pleasant manners will continue to gather around him many friends during his term of office Notwithstanding, the Constitution would rather see a Democrat in the place, but as it is not our day, we cheerfully extend our congratula tions to Mr. Toppass this morning by giving him and the public the news of his appointment.Fc SiK1JLFMN101 5 1QiiS'TP ‘cVwXY L1.)4wo
