THE RALEIGH REGISTER, BFPOKER PLAYERKILLED AFTERAN ARGUMENTMan Slated to Go onTrial For MurderShot to Death; LittleGirl And Anotherms*ntbyneheenis-InjuredBy Register Staff WriterCLAREMONT — An argument over 15 cents in a poker gam*' caused the shotgun death of a man scheduled to be tried in Fayettecircuit court next month on a charge of murder, investigating officers said.ida-vetot-n-r-artar ■toKiTfidWilbert (Doc) Adkins. 30-year-old Meadow Creek man, who had recently moved to this New River mining community, died instantly of a shotgun wound in the back.James Capps, 24, of Claremont, was arrested by state police and county officers and booked at the county jail on a murder charge His 21-year-old wife, Ruby Capp«\ w'as being held at the county jail today for investigation.n:odestni-5,Witnesses told officers that an argument had started over 15 cents in a poker game in session at the Capps home and that Adkins went to his home and returned with ashotgun and attempted to kick open the door. Filling to get in the door, he walked back out into the yard and was shot from a window by young Capps, the police charged.Flying pellets also wounded twoother persons. Betty Adkins, six-year-old daughter of the slain man, who saw’ her father shot, was struck in two or threeplaces in the body by shot. Hospital authorities at the McKen-dree hospital, where she was taken, reported today that she was not seriously injured.Ed Sawyer, of Claremont, was also struck in the arm by two or three shot but was released fromState Trooper W R. Callaghan‘csaid the fatal shooting occurred outside the Capps home Sunday at 4:45 p m.the McKendree hospital after receiving treatment.Trooper Callaghan said the w'ad of shot entered Adkins’ back, puncturing his lung. *Adkins was out on bond for appearance in Fayette circuit court on January 21 to answer indictment for murder in connection with theknife-slaying of Sam Sullivan. * Meadow Creek man. on June 8 1 near the little New River town ofy1Glade.Sullivan died of a knife wound in the chest following an alterca-1 tion between two sets of brothers.
