Walker wh subsequently investigated at the accused’s farm and brought theremains of the deceased to Fairview after an inquest was held atthe farm. He also found at the farm yard two dead dogs and three cats which had apparently been killed by blows on the head. Later on Const. Walker with Corp. Lowes went back to the house and carefully went over the ashes with rakes when they found two butcher knives and a carving knife as well as an ordinary bread knife. These knives were produced in court as exhibits as also were two gasoline cans, and a small axe which was found near the dogs and cats. In addition to his investigation with Const. Walker, Corporal Lowes also testified as to a statement given to him in Fairview on Dec. 4th which corresponds to what the accused told Spotswood that same morning except that it was in more derail.The accused stated that the quarrel had started after he got back from Whitelaw and his wifehad thrown a hot potato at his face during supper. Tne ac ’used had recovered himself after the first attack and had put his wife to bed wh3re she lay awake for a few hours. She had told him she would kill him for choking her but she had subsequently gone ofF to sleep and the accused laid down on another couch in the same room. Later on during the night the woman had got up and got the butcher knife and started for him, and he had then hit her with the chair. Doctor O. J. McFay-den stated that the skull had been fractured at the front, and that this fracture would have been sufficient to cause death.
