Jury Adjourns Marker Quiz For PadlocksInvestigation of Tombstone Placing llallcd for Day While Probers Take Up Cases Under Public Nuisance Law(By Staff Correspondent) LITTLE VALLEY, Dec. 17—After six day* of hearing evidence In the Investigation of the soldiers' headstone disclosures, here, the Grand Jury, hefore which the testimony Is being given adjourned until Thursday to take up tho padlock cases under the public nuisance law.Several witnesses were recalled yesterday, among them being Horace 13. Brown of The Olean Herald, who Identified several letters written by the late Walter W. Welch, former county auditor to Mrs. Blanche B. Hillman of Hinsdale. Mr. Brown also told the Grand Jury of the circumstances under which he came Into possession of the letters which referred to dealings between Mr. Welch, W. C. Allen of Bradford, Pa., and Mrs. Hillman.Devine Called Another witness who was questioned for some Ume yesterday morning was Jarnes Devine, supervisor of Humphrey, and minority leader of the Democratic membership of the board.Tho lnx'csllgalion last Fall disclosed that Mr. Devine had certified to a large number of cases In which headstones were placed In Humphrey cemeteries, the certification indicating that the atones and their bases complied with the specifications. Several Humphrey and Salamanca people have told of headstones erected In Humphrey ccmrtcries at graves already marked by monuments previously placed 011 family lots by relatives, and tho records of the Surrogate’s Court have been cited to show that some men for whom headstones were placed at county expense died leaving considerable estates.Other witnesses who testified yesterday were County Auditor Leonard H. Swan, who was recalled, and his assistant Bessie Ktlbum of Little Valley.FHo Immunity Wavers Wavers of immunity filed yesterday in the county clerk’s office were of Isaac Cleveland of Humphrey, Merritt A. Gil* Of Hinsdale, H. A. Hollister of EUlcottvJltc. George Oliver of Olean and George L. Folts of Great Valley.Mr. Glle was the signer of a large number of petitions for headstones.The investigation will enter its seventh day tomorrow morning when the probe of the headstone affair is continued. It is not expected the Grand Jury will report before the end of this week or the first of next week as thero arc many witnesses yet to be questioned.
