PATRICK DOWD DIESFROM BULLETIShot Late Last Night inEevere, Assailant Escapedf4Much Mystery in Case, WhichPolice Are Trying to Clear*'SEVERE. Dec 17—Patrick Dowd, aged 26, unmarried, son of Mrs Annie Dowd of 40 Eastern av, died at the Massachusetts General Hospital this morning from a bullet wound in the abdomen. He was shot at 31. o’clock last evening at the corner of School st and Eastern av by a man who escaped.There is considerable mystery surrounding the shooting which the policeare endeavoring .to clear up. The motive that prompted the deed is not mant-' feat at present. The police this morning arrested a man -who they believed to have been Dowd's assailant* but they learned later they., were mistaken and have exonerated him of having any connection with the shooting. They found a dirk knife in his possession and he ■was charged with carrying a danger-ouw weapon in the Chelsea Court today •■and held in $500 for a hearing Dec 21. He gave his name as Gregona Casa-betta, aged 24, of 86‘J Broadway. He isa shoeworker. ,The police are seaehing for Faoil Capano, aged 26. of True st. Revere, who, they assert, did the shooting, .They say that Dowel was walking with Joseph Flood of Florence st, Everett, and Ebber Bath of Sprague st when two shots were fired at them by Capano. Flood and Bath reported the shooting to the police. 4lt;rTDowd is said to have remarked, “He won’t get away with that,” and tried to catch him. It is said that a third shot was IIred and this is believed to have been the bullet that killed Dowd.Dowd lived with his m it her and has three brothers and a sister. His father Is dead. He is said by the police to have been somewhat feeble minded, though bis condition was not serious. Capano is said to have returned recently from1 the Maine woods and Capt W illiam E. Tappan has been assigned to the case by Chief John J. DyerCapano is described as b feet i inches in hight and wore a cap and .dark overcoat and yellow gloves.
