Calif.Gomes said the guard heard the two men climbing some cooler ductwork on the side of the tower and turned and fired, wounding Maeon fatally. He said Jorgeson cither fell or jumped, suffering two broken ankles in the 20-fool drop.The warden said Cox had attempted to distract the guard by telling him he was delivering flashlight batteries. Gomes declined to ident ify the guard.All three had been in the prison library, allegedly working on appeals of their cases shortly before the incident, said Gomes. The incident oc-cured about 8:30 p.m.Gomes called all “three desperate people.”Mncon. who was an escapee from the Missouri Training Center for Men at Moberlv, Mo., at the time of liis arrest in Arizona, had fled a prison hospital ward with Jorgeson earlier this year. Macon was serving a life sentence for the November 1970 shooting death of George Brunswick, ofi, n Holbrook sendee station operator. He was arrested the next day alter an alert bus driver notified police in Winslow. The slaying followed the SSQ rob-hery of Brunswick by six men.He and Jorgeson fled the prison ward at the Pinal County Genera) Hospital in April after overpowering a guard. The pair kidnaped a guard and nurse, but released them unharmed a short time later.Macon had undergone a tonsillectomy the day before the escape from the hospital and ■ Jorgeson was allegedly recovering from a rattlesnake hite.They were captured several hours Inter after an off-duty prison guard spotted them driving near Phoenix. The guard alerted police and the pair were captured when their car crashed following a highspeed chase in Phoenix.Macon again fled officers in September after lie had been returned to Missouri to fart* trial on his earlier escape there. He overpowered one guard and left the other handcuffed when the trio stopped for lunch in Douglas County. Mn. He was later recaptured and was returned to Arizona on Nov. 1.Cox was sentenced to 30 years lo life for the robbery of a North Dakota couple in n Flagstaff motel.
