BRUTAL ASSAULT.Ola Mail In Tama County Beaten 3* early to Death.Toledo, Dec. 13.—On Saturday morning Mr. Rudolph Reich man, of this city, made a visit to his farm lying north of Garwin, this counry. The farm was in possession of Johann Hansen. Hansen, noticing the approach of Mr. Reiehman, sent a little girl to notify him to leave the farm, as he did not want Mm aTonnd, but Mr, Reiehman did not obey the notice, feeling tjiat he was not a trespasser. Thereupon Hansen and Frank Landt, who happened to he with him, assaulted Mr. Reiehman. pounding him most brutally. Mr. Reiehman, after recovering from this attack, started to Garwin, 'hut had gone but a little way south when two men in a sled, having their faces blackened to disguise theroselves, appeared on the road alongside of Reiehman and again assaulted the feeble old man, striking him to the ground, jumping on Ms breast and saying in German that “now they would kill the old devil,” and only left him after beating him to insensibility, leaving him lying on the roadside. Mr. Reiehman, on recovering consciousness, with t-he assistance of some boys coming along the road' was brought to Gar win and succeeded in reaching home on the evening train, and has been since that time in a most precarious condition.Johann Hansen, Frank Hugo. Henry Julien and EmmilleLandt, five brothers, with Mr. Hansen, have been arrested charged with assault on the person of Mr. R. Reiehman, with the attempt to commit murder. The men were landed in jail, but on yesterday secured temporary bail to appear before Esquire Dingee this afternoon at 2- o’clock _ for examination on the charge as cited above. The affair has produced a sensation, Mr. Reiehman being a long resi dent of Tama county, highly respected, and was a number of years ago engaged in the newspaper business in this city. He is the possessor of some fine farms lying between Gar win and Gladbrook. It appears that his assailants have borne an unsavory reputation in their community for some years. Mr. Reiehman had had some difficulty prior to this time with his tenant, Hansen, in regard to the payment of rents. When arrested the party were enjoying a birthday beer drink at one of the Landt brothers1.tS!Ttlbv
