Office General Manager,60 Bay Street.Savannah, Ga., Dec. 10, 188LTo the People of Alabama and Georgia: In justice to the United States Construction and Improvement Company and myself, I wouldstate to you that I was ougaged Thursday, the 8th inst., and Friday, ihe nth inst., in paying off engineers and parties holdingclaimsagainst the United States Construction and Improvement Company.I was paying the claim of a gentleman this morning when my First Assistant Engineer came to inform me that my office was closed by an officer of the law.Desiring to immediately complete the payment of Uiosp engineers about whose claims there was no dispute, I submitted to-day to the attorneys of the engiueei-s a written proposition “to begin paying Monday or Tuesday morning, and pay as rapidly as the accounts eon hi be adjusted, upon their giving me a receipt in full for each party paid for ull his claims.The proposition was not accepted. This should convince any unprejudiced mind that I was striving to avert the disaster, and at the same time endeavoring to amicably adjust the claims, as well as protect myself as General Manager.lam unable to divine what effect this blow may prove to our building the Savannah, Dublin and Western Short Line railroad. It may drive from me those who have pledged me their »up-port, as well as prevent others from aiding the enterprise who doubtless would have done so as the construction of the road progressed.John A.
