Recalls Historic Old Oak TreeEDITOR,Independent-Journal:The story that appeared in the paper of Dec. 5 re the cutting of the old cypress treein the side yard of the SanRafael Library property reminded me of the story of a few years ago of the cutting down of the oak tree in the middle of “E” Street. The tree was located between the Library and thePresbyterian Church. It was described, a number of years ago. in the Believe It Or Not column of Robert Ripley. The old oak was the smallest park in the world. Captain John Fremont is supposed to have camped under its spreading branches. It also served as San Rafael's hanging tree. I recall hearing the story of an Indian who had committed a crime and had been sentenced to hang. He asked for a few days reprieve so that he could say goodbye to his family and friends. In exchange for the few days he agreed to return. He lived up to his promise and was hung on schedule. The location of the old oak tree can still easily be found by the patch on “E'’ Street, unless in the last paving job done by the city, it was covered over.ROV FARRINttTOV TOMFQ
