David R Willetts, chief executive officer of the Frostburg National Bank, testified yesterday in Federal District Court in Baltimore that pay raisesand promotions were given to “the most deserving, mostresponsible persons, regardless of sex ’’Judge Shirley Jones is hearing sex discrimination charges brought by three women against the Frost burg bank The women's attorney,Emily Body, countered with instances when men were selected over women with similar credentials and boosts in salaries Willetts, according to the Associated Press, responded that men showed more “initiative, motivation and responsibility” than the women job candidates.The women contend that the bank intentionally discriminated against them by failing to grant them the same salaries, promotions and benefits as their male counterparts who possessed equal qualifications.Two of the women, Sheila D Grove and Janice KVought, currently hold tellerpositions in the bank The third, Judith Ann Walker, did not return from a maternity leave.WThe trial is expected tccontinue several more days• *(Continued On Pane 7)
