No arrests in blackjack mugging of Sen Verda WelcomeSEN. VERDA WELCOME“I saw absolutely no one on the street, then sud-ly from the side of myhouse a figure appeared out of nowhere, State Senator Verda F. Welcome told the AFRO as she recu-peratetfat her home from a weekend blackjack mugging. 'The incident occured ‘shortly after 5'p.m. last Friday in front of the senator’s home in the 2100 block Liberty Hgts. Ave.Police report that Mrs.Welcome was walkingNorth in the 3500 block Holmes Ave. when a man suddenly appeared andgrabbed. her purse. She was then knocked to the ground and beaten about the head and back.The assailant dragged, the screaming 60 year old’ Legislator down the street. Mrs. Welcome said, i do not know why I didn’t turn the handbag loose.Instead she held on screaming until the thugh hit her over the head with a blackjack.The purse contained approximately $220. I don't usually carry that much money on me, Mrs. Welcome said. And because of the events which immediately preceded the attack, she believes, He knew I had the money.I had just received $112 for a month’s rent from the young man who lives over my office she revealed. Further, she states, It was not the day he usually pays his rent and I suspect he may have just mentioned to someone that hewas going to pay me that day.”--Describing the Incident Mrs. Welcome told the AFRO: I was carrying my purse on my left side and 1 saw no one on the street even as I crossedfrom the Synagogue to my house. I was holding some papers in my left hand.Just as I reached the curb he grabbed me. He was on my right and behind me. I don’t know why 1 held on to the purse but I did. H e was pulling on the bag and I fell against the tree hitting my ankle.I began screaming as he dragged me along the street. I just never thought of turning the bag loose then he hit me once with the blackjack.Sen.
