A jury was then called in the case of Charles Stevens, colored, indicted for assault iu the second degree, second offense, Stevens having s rved a term in the jeu!-tentiary for an assault committed in1896.Witnesses for the pros*cation swore that Stevens entered Edwin Duryea's store, Craigville, on the evening of May fl and assaulted Mr. Duryea, and that when Charles Woodhull, also colored, interfered to assist Mr. l»uryea, Stevens cut him with a kuiie.Stevens’ defense was that those in the store were the aggressors and that fieacted In self-defense.
