2 In 'Together Family' SlainKENT, Conn. (AP) - “The nicest, most together family you could think of. They were a real asset to the community,” said one close friend of the Charles Wilkins family following the deaths of Mrs. Wilkins and her son.Charles E. Wilkins, 51, walked into the Litchfield state police barracks early Tuesday and told troopers there he had shot his wife and son. The bodies of Elizabeth Wilkins, 51, and Charles Reed Wilkins, 19, were found at the family’s home and police arrested Wilkins on a murder charge.Later Tuesday he was arraigned in Torrington Common Pleas Court on two counts of first degree assault and held on $200,000 bond. There was no explanation for the reduced charges.State police said indications were that Mrs. Wilkins and her son had been shot, possiblyAP PHOTOCHARLES WILKINS ...leaving court.Monday, but they were awaiting details of an autopsy study today.M. Adela Eads is one of the Wilkins closest friends. She said she and her husband had gone to the Metropolitan Opera Friday night with the Wilkinses.“We went out to dinner and they talked about where they were going to spend Christmas,” said Mrs. Eads. She also said she talked with Mrs. Wilkins Sunday and there were no indications anything might be wrong.Robert Davis of Kent said he had attended a party at the Wilkins home last month and there was no sign of family problems. “They were very proud of the renovations they had done to their home,” he said, adding they had spent “thousands” for the work.Ijocal real estate agent MarshaBurnham said Tuesday Wilkins had been affiliated under her real estate license since midsummer, but “it didn’t work out.” She said Wilkins had recently “paid up all the bills he owed.”In court Tuesday public defender Stanley Herman said Wilkins was very distraught and altough he had not formally asked for a public defender he was “in dire financial need.” The Wilkins had been active in a variety of community affairs. Their son had taken a leave of absence from Dartmouth College Nov. 8. But school officals said there was no indication of family problems being involved.A public relations executive, Wilkins had worked for several years for Arabian-American Oil in New York and the Middle East.
