THREE MONTHS IN JAIL.Columbus' Lee Suffers Penalty for. Stealing Chickens.Oolumbus Lee, a man of unprepossessing appearance who foi some lime has been a terror to the chicken coops of farmers between here and Ohrieman, was oanght red-handed in plying his vocation on Sunday by Ohief-of-Police Armentront. He was sentenced Monday to three months in jail by Justice Pendleton Bryan.On Sunday Lee apppeared at the home of Ashby Malone, just north of town, and tried to sell to Mrs. Malone some obicken8(six in nnumber) which he “had gotten by shucking corn/’ but that lady wisely decided not to run the risk of buying fowls from Lee. even at the extremely low price he asked f'or them.In the afternoon Chief Armentront learned from Mr. Newt. Liskey, that he misled some chickens which he thought had been taken from his roost on Saturday night. Mr. Armentront got the scent in short order, and in a very few hours had laid his hands ugon Lee, who, when charged with the theft, owned up and told the whole story.He was brought to trial Monday before Justice Bryan, and sentenced by the magistrate to three months in jail.For some time Columbus Lee has been a notorious character in We*tfRockingham. He has been on the ehain gang once in his career and in the county-jail three or four times. He lives in the mountains in theneighborhood of Ohrisman and has%an unsavory reputation in that community.
