Police Chief Robert l,ong, and Jim Baird, an attorney hired by the board Tuesday to act as special counsel on relations with the patrolmen While the board met Patrolman Roger Barton, president and spokesman of the Tinley Park chapter of the Combined Counties Police' association 'CCPA, waited for the village officials to finish their meetingAT 11:30 A.M.. the board returned to the board room and reconvened before a small audience that included Barton andTinley Park to expandpolice station facilitiesA $500,000 expansion and remodeling of Tinley Park police de ties were approved by the village board at its meeting TuesdayThe alterations approved include a 3.600 square foot addition to the east of the municipal complex at 173rd place and 6«th court that will be used primarily to help ease crowded police department conditionsThe approved alterations to the municipal building are all that remain of a previously approved plan that included construction of a new village hall for more than $1 million The new hall was scratched earlier this year due to con struction cost considerationsWHEN COMPLETED, the project will provide additional parking lighting administrative areas, evidence rooms, cells, a photo lab and larger commumca tion centerAccording to Bob McKenna, the architect hired by the board to design the ad dition and plan the remodeling, ground could be broken for the addition by late April and the project finished in about one yearallocations(Chicago Heights, Homewood. Floss moor, Glenwood and Olympia Fields has gotten no hint from IDOT on the agency’s decision, but said it is apparent thatcommunities down the road from com mission municipalities to plug into the water system as they receive lake alloca tionsPatrolmen Tim Fhlers and Tom Boling three of the seven officers facing four-day suspensions without pay for their absence from work last weekend When the suspensions were imposed by Chief Long on Monday, the patrolmen's union reportedly threatened to strike if the disciplinary action was enforced *Long’s reputation as a strict discipli narian was one of th attributes that re suited in his appointment as chief in 1974 from a field of 110 applicants In response, the board stayed impli mentation of the suspensions until Friday to provide a cooling off period and opportunity for discussions with the patrolmenAFTER RECONVENING, the board voted unanimously to reinstitute thewchief's authority to handle the discipline in the manner he believes appropriate under the law and the rules of the vil lage.”Immediately after the meeting.
