In a surprise raid on a rundown factory building in the suburb of Portici, Allied police officials discovered and dosed up one of the biggest bootleg Uquor outfits m southern Italy, where solidified fuel alcohol was being molted, watered, dosed with citrus fruit extract and bottled for sale to Allied troops.For Lt Col. Walter Doherty, Allied Military Government police chief in Naples, who directed the raid, it was the biggest haul yet. Tipped off by a British mess sergeant who peed 12 dollars for 30 bottles alleged to be cognac, vermouth and cherry brandy, his raiding party of two military officers and Italian police in plain clothes, found eoough bootleg bot-tie* and ecmlDDient to make three truck loads. Among the label*, which might still appear on the market, was one with the name Rizard and Cie., Paris, which failed to mention the contents of the bottle; another labelled Uquore Chery Brandy with cherry misspelled; and a third labelled Char ry Brandy Qualita Superiors The contents of the bottles, purported to be gin, brandy, cognac, rum and vermouth, are in reality a close kin to Btemo, the banned heat used back in the 8tates for cooking purposes.
