PETTY ROBBERIES COMMITTEDHartzler Hardware Store and Jahnz Pool Room Broken Into Sunday Night.A youthful band of robbers which ought easily be run to earth has been committing depredations in and around this town for the past six months or a year. Sunday night Hartzler’s hardware was entered and three revolvers, a quantity of ammunition and some pocket knives were taken. The robbers gained entrance by breaking a glass in the east side of the building. By their tracks in the snow there were two or three of them. After pilfering the store the thieves left by theback door which is secured from the inside with a heavy wooden bar. The same persons, so it is believed, also gained entrance into the Otto Jahnz pool room by breaking out a pane of glass and creeping through. Here they secured some tobacco, some pennies from a gum machine, a pocket knife and some candy. They calmly walked out the side door and left it ajar. This robbery occurred before church was out. Frank Musselman’s folks noticed the door of the building standing open, but supposed the owner was about. Some boys had been seen playing about the place earlier in the evening. The pool room is the rendezvous for a lot of young lads, and it is not at all unlikely that some ofthe habitues conceived the idea ofrobbing the place. Certain it is that whoever broke the window in the pool room knew the lay of the land on the inside of the house. The window was curtained, and from the outside one could not tell what obstructions would be encountered on the inside. A pane in the upper part of the sash was broken out and entrance gained thereby. Owing to some fixtures, entrance could not have been gained through the lower part of the window. All this goes to show that whoever did the job was familiar with the inside of the house and had laid his planswell. C. M. Townsend's store hasbeen entered two or three times in the past year, and the room where the defunct Wilson Co., stock of goods is kept was also broken into. Indications point to local talent, and our officers owe it to the people to make a careful search for the guilty ones. Now that the band has arms, unless they are taken soon, it is not improbable that murder will be added to robbery. The officers are not without strong clews to work upon, and it is to be hoped they will follow these up vigorously.eral thousand dollars in the past year. Finney, the postmaster of that city, who was sentenced to two years in the federal prison for embezzlement. as already told in the Republican, is waiting for instructions to start alone on his trip to Leavenworth. The sentenced man is without guards or bonds. He is as free as ever, until the day when, in his morning mail, comes the official letter that means the beginning of two years of confinement. His ssentence resulted from the embezzlement of $1,100, the sum necessary to release him from a financial strain following an unsuccessful investment. He pleaded guilty to the charge, in hope of leniency and was immediately sentenced to two years in the federal prison. His confession, however, gained the confidence of the court and he was allowed to return to his home to straighten out his business affairs and prepare for the wants of his family while he is serving his term. He spent Thursday at the postoffice while the inspectors checked him out.Finney was a highly respected citizen of Valparaiso and has been postmaster there for several years. He had invested in several unprofitable schemes and, on his last venture, took money from the post-office receipts, expecting to make big profits.
