POOR CHARLIE SAYS!OUTRAGEOUSLY LOW BOND Release of an ex-convict on an outrageously low bond after he had been charged with the savage iug-vvrench beating of a construction superintendent, who had been having trouble with members of St. Louis Steamfitters Local 562, typifies what is wrong with too much of our judiciary today.The accused, Charles R. Bierschwal, 22, of Cape Girardeau, has been out of prison only since Aug. 2 when his two-year sentence for burglary and stealing was commuted by Governor Warren L. Ilcarncs.The charge against him is assault with intent to do great bodily harm. He has been identified by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Blocker as the man who brutally beat Blocker about the head and body with the tire tool, putting Blocker in the hospitalwith gashes that required -Hi stitches to close.So bestial was the assault that the assailant continued to rain blows on the legs of the victim after Mrs. Blocker threw herself across her husband’s body to protect him.Yet Magistrate N. Hob Iale of Marble Hillreleased the man, charged with this heinous crime, on the puny bond of $200 cash or $1000surety.As a bare minimum - and certainly not in an aggravated case such as this - judges in St. Louis Circuit Courts require at least a $1500 surety bond.The bond in this instance should have been many times this to insure the accused’s appearance incourt. Even in certain traffic cases, a bond of $500 is required.This was as mean a crime as has been committed in recent years. Now th hard w irking, honest construction supt rintendent, who ha lbeen forced to carry a gun because ol repeated attempts by steamfitter- to intimidate him andmembers of other building crafts at the Marble Hill construction job is in the hospital ind reportedly will be transferred to Louisiana whenhe recovers.This is a crime that demands justice.Is there a connection between Blocker’s troubles with the steamfitters and this man charged with beating the construction superintendent, whom he had never seen before thealleged beating'.’ If the accused skips his Ixmd,these questions may never be answered.- -G lo be* pttii ioc rat
