SULLIVAN COUNTY MINERMURDERED AT TERRE HAUTEFrank Coleman, of Near Shelburn, Murdered Sunday By Charles Whiteman Following Quarrel.Terre Haute, Ind., Dec. 4—Frank Coleman, age 3S, a coal miner of Shelburn, is dead and Charles Whiteman, age4 44, of Taylorville, across the river from Terre Haute, is held without bail, on a charge of first degree murder as a result of a fight at Whiteman’s home Sunday. Detectives William Mitchell and Sam Burke were standing within 300 feet of the house when the shot was fired. They were investigating the death earlier yesterday or late Saturday of Ella Terrell, age 48, who is believed to have been .murdered and whose body was found in a ravine.Police said the shooting was the result of an alleged attack by Whiteman on Maggie Hooker, a relative of ■ Coleman. It was said the woman hadrbeen beaten severely in the face.Whiteman admitted he shot Coleman, but said today '.in the Vigo county jail that he shot in self-defense.” Coleman came to my house with several members of his family,” Whiteman said, “and accused me of beating Maggie Hooker, my housekeeper. I denied the charges, but Coleman drew a revolver, I grabbed his hand and threw him to the floor. Coleman jumped up. He grabbed a hammer and struck me. It was then that 1 shot him.” ••Whiteman’s housekeeper told the pplice,. it is said*that she saw Coleman draw his revolver.
