New Titles, Old PayNine Hobbs policemen have received promotions “in name only” as a result of a change in rank structure and the elimination of the rank of corporal.According to Capt. Bob Cheney, commander of the operations and support services divisions, who is acting as chief during the absence of Chief Jim Palmer, recuperating from surgery, the rank structure changes were madenecessary in order to comply with the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.All sergeants have been promoted to lieutenant, and all corporals to sergeant, but no change in p8y accompanies the promotions. The department will no longerU i rv i rPolicemenhave any corporals, “creating a more distinct separation between supervisory personnel and those in a non-supervisory capacity, said Cheney.The action was taken to draw a clear-cut line between management personnel, who are exempt, and employees classified as non-exempt under the act.Patrolmen tvU! *lao now be classified in three groups, first class, second class, and third class. No pay changes accompany the new titles.Officers affected by the change include (with newrank) Lt. K. P. Wright, Sgt. Paul Mallory, Lt. Tony Aguilar, Lt. Bob Watta, Sgt. Gene Gunderson, Lt. Bill Wigginton, Sgt. Ed Sloman, Lt. Steve Lasater and S^t. Charles Daniels.
