Volunteer Santa Claus Is FugitiveNEW YORK (UPI) — A 20-year-old volunteer Santa Claus working in New York turned out to be a fugitive from justice, and police say he could spend this Christmas not in a sleigh but in the slam.Michael McBride was working his third day as a Volunteer of America Santa Claus in Herald Squarewhen he became ill and went into a subway station to sit downTransit police officer Edwin Cassar approached McBride who was still wearing his beard, boots, and red costume. When he asked for identification, McBride produced a bundle of papers from his pocket and handed it to Cassar.A buff-colored piece of paper caught the cop's eye.It was a Desk Appearance Ticket ordering McBride to report to Manhattan Criminal Court on Oct. 26, 1977, to answer charges of grand larceny, police said.McBride was taken into custody and now faces the fugitive charge as well as the grand larceny count, officials said.
