DefendantRages AsTrial OpensSAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -Ruchell Magee, accused with Angela Davis of the 1970 Marin county courthouse shootings that killed four persons, was taken from the courtroom yelling “stupid, dumb judge!”Judge Morton R. Colvin ordered the raging defendant taken to a nearby holding cell after Magee ignored his warnings to remain i(uiet during the trial’s initial legal maneuver-ings. Later the defendant returned to the trial. As he was led out by bailiffs, Magee turned to Colvin and yelled: “You are a stupid, dumb judge! I’d like to get my hands on you-”The outburst came after Magee and his attorney, Robert Carrow, filed several motions at the trial’s opening seeking dismissal of all charges and permitting Magee to act as his own attorney. Ah motions were denied by Colvin. After Covin denied the motions, Magee was permitted to return to the courtroom as seating of the first 12 prospective jurors took place. Magee again interupted, telling the jurors the proceedings were “making a fool out of you.” He was again admonished by Colvin.Magee, 32, San Quentin inmate, was photographed holding a shotgun wired to the head of Superior Court Judge Harold Haley just before the gunbattte broke out outside the Marin courthouse.Magee also is charged with kidnaping Haley and four others who were taken hostage in Haley's courtroom as part of an involved escape attempt Aug. 7, 1970, which has never been fully explained.TIF(
