TevisM akesDealBy JAY BEMIS Herald Staff WriterA Carbondale man pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to a reduced charge in the July stabbing death of Jari Wills.Charles E. Tevis, 34, pleaded guilty in Franklin County District Court to aiding a felon, after an original charge of aiding and abetting second-degree murder was dismissed in plea-bargaining with the Franklin County Attorney.Under the plea, County Attorney Wendell Barker said, Tevis agrees to testify next week at the trial of Michael E. Hicks, 36, rural Wellsville, who’s charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder in Wills’ death.Wills, 29, a former Kansas State University basketball player and Ottawa University student, was stabbed during a July 25 fight at The Saddleback Lounge, 111 N. Main. .Tevis and Hicks are two of four people charged in the death. Sherrell Burgess, 24, Ottawa, was convicted in November by a Franklin County jury of aiding and abetting voluntary manslaughter in the slaying. Her husband, Donald, 39, was convicted by another jury later in November of aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
